An Obelisk is a tall, four-sided, narrow tapering monument which ends in a pyramid-like shape at the top, and is said to resemble a petrified ray of the sun-disk. The shadow it casts follows the seasons across the garden, giving the observant a perspective on how the garden interacts with the sun.
These Tuteurs (French for obelisk shaped structures used to train vines) are made from powder coated aluminum extrusions with corrosion resistant fasteners. Standard sizes are 14” and 18” square bases by 4’, 5’ or 6” tall. The side rungs are spaced 11” apart.
Tuteurs can be used several ways. They can be put in the field to support vines. Stabilize the Tuteur by burying the feet in the ground to the bottom rung. They can be used on a hard surface over a container as a trellis. They can also be added to wood or resin containers. The Deluxe Model can be built around existing plants and trellises without having to prune severely the plant.
There are two different models to chose from.
The Standard Model requires assembly by the customer. It is shipped unassembled to reduce shipping cost and damage. The Standard Model modelhas 1” square posts and 3/4” rungs. The Tuteur is assembled using sheet metal screws through predrilled holes going into internal screw bosses. An electric screw driver with 1/4” driver is recommend. It should take less than a half hour for the first unit to be assembled. Additional units will require substantially less time.
The Deluxe Model comes partly assembled. The pre assembled four sides are snapped together and the top is put on. It should take less than 15 minutes the first time, and less than five minutes each after the first. The posts on the Deluxe Models are 1 1/2” square and the rungs are 1” square. The Deluxe Model is significantly heavier than the standard model. The Deluxe Model has the additional advantage that all fasteners are hidden inside the unit.
Bronze and white are the standard colors.
Special requests for nonstandard sizes can easily be accommodated. Feel free to ask. We enjoy doing the unusual.
